Harrogate Scrubbers have beaten their own goal of getting 1,000 scrubs to Harrogate Hospital by the end of this week, by supplying 1,125 to the hospital in less than a month. On track to supply the full 2,036 requested in the next few weeks, their membership of nearly 800 volunteers are flying high.
Reacting to the developments this week, Fran Taylor who started the group said: “It has literally been a whirlwind for the last 3-4 weeks. We never expected this level of support from either the community or further afield. Over the last week Supplies for Key Workers and Harrogate Fire crew have also helped make the scrubs deliveries. North Yorkshire Scrubbers have made a significant contribution providing us with 233 scrubs, 533 bags, 236 hats and 15 headbands, whilst also supporting other groups in the area. The addition of seamstress, Mary Walker, letting Furnish & Fettle use her work room as one of our hubs has also significantly increased the number of packs we have been able to issue.”
More companies in the area have joined in their support for the Scrubbers including additional donations of patterns from Write Design and Print Ltd (Wetherby) and Lindum Group (York). Brigantes Rotary Club have donated £500 towards materials, Askham Wood WI are fundraising and sewing scrubs and group member Katrina Porter has donated 70m of fabric and 40m of cord, making them into scrubs.
Many other group members have also bought their own supplies to help the Scrubbers achieve its target. From the three hubs the group have now set up, over 535 packs have already been sent out to sewing volunteers, with three sets of scrubs in each, and over 400 people are sewing the scrubs at home. These figures don’t include the volunteers at the three hubs cutting and distributing the packs and the ‘scrubberoo team’, which involves another 100 volunteers.
Celebrity Natalie Anderson, from Emmerdale and The Royal, recently contacted the group to express her amazement at their achievements, and interviewed founder Fran Taylor live on Instagram, promoting the group and the donation link through her own social media.
Steve Russell, Chief Executive at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support from the community and local businesses. We have already received 1,125 scrubs and these are making such a difference to our staff. We can’t thank everyone involved enough. It is such an amazing thing to do – what wonderful community spirit.”
